Rwandan Jails Burning Again

The prison of Kimironko caught fire last week, reportedly on the 31st of March. Witnesses say they heard a lot of gunshots being fired, but the government was quick to dismiss such reports as unfounded rumors.

That was before an amateur video came out in which you can distinctly hear shots being fired.

Today it seems inmates started throwing stones at the jail’s manager’s office and it was raining stones in the streets near the jail walls.

The police had to intervene.

Under Paul Kagame’s regime, Rwandan prisons have been known to catch fire spontaneously, sometimes several jails being affected in the same period. In one case a mass grave was “found” by the authorities after such a fire had devastated a prison in Northen Rwanda. Around 5000 bodies. The government declared those were “victims of the 1994 genocide of the Tutsi.” In the same period thousands of people in the same region had gone missing, and Kagame’s government said they had probably left the country to seek employment or business opportunities overseas.
